Epstein-Barr virus specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes (EBV-CTLs) are a form of adoptive cell therapy that uses T cells specifically targeting EBV antigens. These cells are typically harvested from patients or donors, expanded ex vivo, and then infused to treat or prevent EBV-associated lymphoproliferative disorders and malignancies. EBV-CTLs recognize EBV-infected cells through their T-cell receptors and can effectively lyse these targets. They have shown significant efficacy in preventing and treating post-transplant lymphoproliferative disease (PTLD) in immunocompromised patients, with minimal toxicity and long-term persistence in vivo.
