Overview

EqStim is a USDA-approved veterinary immunostimulant consisting of 0.4 mg/mL non-viable *Propionibacterium acnes* suspended in 12.5% ethanol in saline. It is indicated as an adjunct to conventional therapy for the treatment of Equine Respiratory Disease Complex (ERDC) in horses, including foals and older animals[1][2][3][5]. The product enhances the equine immune response and has been shown to increase the rate of recovery from both primary and secondary bacterial and viral respiratory infections when used alongside antibiotics or hyperimmune therapy[2][3]. The mechanism of action involves activation of innate immunity through interaction with Toll-like receptor 9 (TLR9) on antigen-presenting cells such as macrophages, leading to upregulation of cytokines that promote pathogen clearance[8]. EqStim must be administered intravenously by a veterinarian.
