Drug intelligence / Profile preview
EQU-001 is a novel, once-daily oral anti-inflammatory anti-seizure medication (ASM) being developed by Equilibre Biopharmaceuticals. It is a proprietary formulation of a repurposed antiparasitic medication. Unlike traditional ASMs that primarily modulate neuronal ion channels to suppress action potentials, EQU-001 acts through a novel anti-inflammatory mechanism, reducing the plasma levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-17 and IL-1β and limiting the ability of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) to secrete cytokines like IL-21, IFN-γ, and TNF-α. The drug is currently in Phase 2 clinical development as an adjunctive therapy for focal seizures in adults with epilepsy, with potential applications in traumatic brain injury, spasticity, and multiple sclerosis.
