Overview

Equine Botulinum Neurotoxin D Immune FAB2 is a biologic antitoxin preparation composed of polyclonal antibody fragments (F(ab')₂) derived from equine plasma. It is used for the treatment of documented or suspected exposure to botulinum toxin serotype D. The mechanism of action involves passive immunization, where the F(ab')₂ antibody fragments bind and neutralize circulating (unbound) botulinum neurotoxin D, preventing it from interacting with nerve endings and being internalized into target cells. This helps prevent further progression of paralysis but does not reverse established paralysis once the toxin has bound to nerve terminals[1][5][7]. The product is typically manufactured by immunizing horses with inactivated forms of the toxin, collecting plasma, and purifying the relevant antibodies.
