Overview

Equine Botulinum Neurotoxin F Immune FAB2 is a polyclonal antibody fragment preparation derived from equine plasma. It is used as part of the Botulism Antitoxin Heptavalent (BAT), which contains F(ab')2 and related fragments targeting all seven known serotypes of botulinum neurotoxins (A-G), including type F. The drug provides passive immunization by binding to and neutralizing circulating unbound botulinum toxin molecules, thereby preventing their interaction with neuronal receptors and subsequent internalization into cholinergic nerve terminals. This action blocks the toxic effects of the neurotoxin but does not reverse toxicity once the toxin has entered cells. BAT is indicated for treatment following documented or suspected exposure to any of the seven serotypes in adults and pediatric patients[1][4][5][7]. The product was developed by Cangene Corporation, now a subsidiary of Emergent BioSolutions.
