Overview

This combination therapy consists of equine rabies immunoglobulin (ERIG) and purified chick-embryo cell rabies vaccine (PCECV) used together as post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) for rabies. ERIG provides immediate passive immunity through antibodies against the rabies virus, while PCECV stimulates the body's immune system to produce its own antibodies (active immunity). The PCECV component is manufactured using the fixed-virus strain Flury Low Egg Passage (LEP) grown in primary cultures of chicken fibroblasts, then inactivated with β-propiolactone. This combination therapy is administered according to WHO or CDC guidelines, with ERIG given at the wound site and PCECV administered through a series of injections, either intramuscularly or intradermally depending on the protocol.
