Overview

Equine tetanus immunoglobulin F(ab′)2 is a purified preparation of F(ab′)2 fragments obtained from the plasma of horses hyperimmunized with tetanus toxoid. It is indicated for the passive immunization and prophylaxis of tetanus in individuals with tetanus-prone wounds, especially when human tetanus immunoglobulin (HTIG) is unavailable. The manufacturing process involves pepsin digestion of equine IgG to remove the Fc portion, which significantly reduces the risk of hypersensitivity reactions and serum sickness compared to traditional whole-molecule equine tetanus antitoxin (TAT). The F(ab′)2 fragments retain the ability to bind and neutralize tetanospasmin, the potent neurotoxin produced by Clostridium tetani, thereby preventing the toxin from binding to gangliosides at the neuromuscular junction and blocking its retrograde axonal transport to the central nervous system.
