Overview

Equisetum giganteum aqueous extract (AEGH) is a botanical extract derived from the giant horsetail plant, a species used in traditional medicine primarily as a diuretic. The extract demonstrates **anti-inflammatory potential** in acute inflammation models by reducing articular nociception, decreasing leukocyte migration, and inhibiting lymphocyte proliferation. AEGH exhibits **immunomodulatory effects** on both B and T lymphocytes, with action independent of cytotoxicity. The mechanism of action appears to involve inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokine production and modulation of immune cell activity. The plant contains various bioactive constituents including alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols, phytosterols, saponins, sterols, silicic acid, tannins, triterpenoids, and volatile oils. Research suggests the extract may have applications in treating inflammation, genitourinary diseases, wound healing, and rheumatic diseases. Studies in antigen-induced arthritis models in mice demonstrated significant reduction in pain and inflammatory markers.
