Equus caballus hair is a biological allergenic extract derived from the hair of the domestic horse, used primarily for the diagnosis of horse-related allergies. Approved by the FDA in 1967, it is utilized in skin prick and intradermal testing to identify patients with IgE-mediated hypersensitivity to horse dander and hair proteins. The extract contains a variety of proteins, including the major allergen Equ c 1, which induce a localized allergic response (wheal and flare) in sensitized individuals.
