Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Er Ding Er Xian decoction (EDEXD) is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formula developed by the Yueyang Hospital of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine, affiliated with the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is specifically designed for the treatment of recurrent urinary tract infections (RUTI), a condition often characterized in TCM as a combination of kidney deficiency and damp-heat. The formula consists of four primary herbal components: 'Er Ding' (two 'Ding' herbs: *Viola yedoensis* and *Lobelia chinensis*) which function to clear heat and detoxify the urinary tract, and 'Er Xian' (two 'Immortal' herbs: *Curculigo orchioides* and *Epimedium*) which tonify the kidney and strengthen the body's 'Zheng Qi' (immune defense). Pharmacologically, EDEXD has been shown to inhibit the TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway, thereby reducing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α. It also appears to enhance mucosal immunity in the bladder by increasing secretory IgA levels and modulating the local microbiota, effectively preventing the adhesion and colonization of uropathogenic *Escherichia coli* (UPEC).
