Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Erandamooladi Basti is a classical Ayurvedic medicated enema (Niruha Basti) formulation used for the management of Vata-dominant disorders, particularly those involving the musculoskeletal and nervous systems. It is a complex polyherbal mixture consisting of a decoction of Erandamoola (*Ricinus communis* root) and other herbs, combined with honey, rock salt, medicated oils, and herbal pastes. The therapy is clinically indicated for conditions such as sciatica (Gridhrasi), rheumatoid arthritis (Amavata), lumbar spondylosis, and chronic lower back pain. The mechanism of action involves the rectal administration of the formulation, which allows for the systemic absorption of bioactive phytochemicals—including alkaloids, flavonoids, and ricinoleic acid—across the rectal mucosa. These compounds provide anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects by inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokines like TNF-alpha and IL-6, and modulating cyclooxygenase (COX) activity, thereby reducing pain and inflammation while balancing the Vata Dosha.
