Overview

Ercalcitriol is an active metabolite of vitamin D2 and functions as a vitamin D receptor (VDR) agonist with high binding affinity. Upon binding to VDR, it forms a complex with the retinoid X receptor (RXR) to regulate target gene transcription. This mechanism allows ercalcitriol to enhance the innate immune defense of the oral mucosa by promoting the expression of antimicrobial peptides, such as hCAP-18/LL-37. It is primarily investigated for its potential in periodontal diseases and immune-related oral conditions. Ercalcitriol has demonstrated equipotent antirachitic activity in rats compared to calcitriol.
