Overview

Erchen Tang (also known as Erchen Decoction) is a foundational Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formula first recorded in the 'Tai Ping Hui Min He Ji Ju Fang.' It is traditionally indicated for 'damp-phlegm' syndromes, characterized by cough with abundant white sputum, nausea, and chest congestion. The formula typically comprises four primary herbs: *Pinellia ternata* (Banxia), *Citrus reticulata* (Chenpi), *Poria cocos* (Fuling), and *Glycyrrhiza uralensis* (Gancao). Modern pharmacological research indicates that Erchen Tang exerts anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and metabolic-regulating effects. It has been shown to inhibit the PI3K/AKT/NF-κB signaling pathway, thereby reducing the expression of inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6). Clinically, it is investigated for its efficacy in treating community-acquired pneumonia and hyperlipidemia, often as part of integrated therapy.
