Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Erdong Tang (二冬汤) is a classical traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula that has been modernized and approved in China as a Class 3.1 TCM new drug in the form of Erdong Tang Granules. The formula originates from the Qing Dynasty medical text *Yi Xue Xin Wu* (*医学心悟*) by Cheng Guopeng. It is composed of eight herbal ingredients: Asparagi Radix (Tian Men Dong), Ophiopogonis Radix (Mai Men Dong), Trichosanthis Radix (Tian Hua Fen), Scutellariae Radix (Huang Qin), Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhi Mu), Nelumbinis Folium (He Ye), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Ren Shen), and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan Cao). Erdong Tang Granules are indicated for 'upper xiao' (a type of diabetes/消渴症 characterized by lung-heat and yin deficiency), with symptoms including persistent polydipsia (excessive thirst), frequent urination, and a rapid, weak pulse. The formula works by nourishing lung yin, clearing stomach heat, and promoting fluid generation. Key developers of the approved granule formulation include Jiangxi Yaodu Zhangshu Pharmaceutical (a subsidiary of Renhe), Guizhou Wemen Pharmaceutical, Zhejiang Wecome Pharmaceutical, and Shineway Pharmaceutical.
