Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Erdosteine + bepotastine besilate is a combination therapy being developed by Daewoong Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd. for the treatment of respiratory and allergic conditions. Erdosteine is a mucolytic prodrug whose active metabolites contain free sulfhydryl groups that reduce the viscosity of bronchial secretions by breaking disulfide bonds in mucoproteins. It also exhibits antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. Bepotastine besilate is a second-generation, non-sedating antihistamine that acts as a selective antagonist at the histamine H1 receptor and also provides mast cell stabilization. This combination is intended to address the overlapping symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or bronchitis and allergic manifestations like allergic rhinitis or urticaria. A Phase 1 clinical trial has evaluated the pharmacokinetic interactions between these two agents.
