Overview

Ergoloid mesylate is a mixture of three hydrogenated ergot alkaloids—dihydroergocornine, dihydroergocristine, and dihydroergocryptine—derived from the fungus *Claviceps purpurea*. It is classified as an ergot derivative and used primarily to treat symptoms of cognitive decline or dementia in elderly patients, including those associated with Alzheimer's disease or multiple small strokes. The drug acts as a nootropic (cognitive enhancer), though its precise mechanism of action remains unclear. It is believed to exert partial agonist/antagonist effects on adrenergic (alpha and beta), dopaminergic, and serotonergic receptors in the brain. Ergoloid mesylate may increase cerebral blood flow and metabolism but does not cure dementia or underlying neurodegenerative diseases[1][3][4][5][7][8]. Developers: Sandoz Manufacturers: Novartis
