Overview
Ergonovine maleate is an ergot alkaloid derivative with potent oxytocic and vasoconstrictive properties. It is primarily indicated for the prevention and treatment of postpartum and postabortal hemorrhage caused by uterine atony. By acting as an agonist at alpha-adrenergic, serotonergic (particularly 5-HT2A), and dopaminergic receptors, it induces rapid, forceful, and sustained uterine contractions and systemic vasoconstriction. In addition to its obstetric uses, ergonovine maleate is utilized as a diagnostic tool during cardiac catheterization to provoke coronary artery spasms in patients suspected of having Prinzmetal's (variant) angina. The drug has also been investigated for the prophylactic treatment of refractory menstrual migraines due to its vasoconstrictive effects on cranial blood vessels.
