Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Erigeron breviscapus is a perennial herb native to China and widely used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for over 600 years. The whole plant is utilized medicinally and contains multiple bioactive compounds, primarily flavonoids such as scutellarin (the main active ingredient), caffeic acid derivatives, phenolic acids, pyranones, and steroids. Erigeron breviscapus exhibits a broad range of pharmacological activities including anti-inflammatory effects, neuroprotection (notably via scutellarin), vasodilation, anticoagulation, antithrombosis, endothelial protection, myocardial protection, antiarrhythmic effects, blood lipid reduction and chondroprotection. It has been studied for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases (such as coronary heart disease and hypertension), cerebrovascular diseases (including stroke recovery), glaucoma (optic nerve protection), osteoarthritis (anti-inflammatory/chondroprotective action), diabetic vascular complications and even antiviral activity against pseudorabies virus in animal models. Its mechanisms involve modulation of inflammatory cytokines like TNF-α and IL-6; inhibition of cyclooxygenase 2; antioxidant activity; improvement of blood circulation; inhibition of apoptosis in retinal ganglion cells; regulation of TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB signaling pathways; among others[1][2][3][5][7][9].
