Overview

Eriodictyol is a naturally occurring flavanone (a subclass of flavonoids) found in various plants such as yerba santa (Eriodictyon californicum), citrus fruits, and other herbs. It is known for its strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Eriodictyol acts as a free radical scavenger by donating hydrogen atoms to neutralize reactive oxygen species (ROS), thereby protecting cells from oxidative damage. It also exhibits neuroprotective effects by crossing the blood-brain barrier and modulating neurotransmitter levels, reducing brain inflammation, and potentially inhibiting amyloid-beta aggregation relevant to neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's disease. Additionally, eriodictyol has been reported to have cardioprotective activity, hepatoprotective effects, antidiabetic actions (including stimulating insulin secretion via cAMP/PKA signaling), anti-obesity potential by alleviating adiposity and hepatic steatosis in animal models, analgesic effects through inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines and enzymes such as cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), antipyretic actions, skin protection benefits due to its antioxidant capacity against UV-induced damage, anticancer activity via multiple cellular signaling pathways including downregulation of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB), and taste-modifying properties that can mask bitterness[2][3][5].
