Overview

Errenatomeran (DS-5670) is a monovalent mRNA-based vaccine developed by Daiichi Sankyo for the prevention of COVID-19 caused by the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron XBB.1.5 variant. Utilizing a proprietary lipid nanoparticle (LNP) delivery system, the vaccine delivers mRNA encoding the full-length spike protein of the XBB.1.5 lineage into host cells. Once translated, the spike protein acts as an antigen, triggering the host's immune system to produce neutralizing antibodies and activate T-cell responses specific to the Omicron variant. This vaccine represents the first mRNA COVID-19 vaccine developed and manufactured domestically in Japan to receive regulatory approval. It was approved by Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) in November 2023 for use as a booster dose in individuals aged 12 years and older.
