ertapenem

Ertapenem is a carbapenem antibiotic used to treat moderate to severe infections caused by susceptible bacteria. It is effective against a broad range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. Ertapenem works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell death. It is indicated for complicated intra-abdominal infections, complicated skin and skin structure infections (including diabetic foot infections without osteomyelitis), community-acquired pneumonia, complicated urinary tract infections (including pyelonephritis), acute pelvic infections (such as postpartum endomyometritis, septic abortion, and post-surgical gynecologic infections), and for the prevention of infection following elective colorectal surgery[1][2][4][5]. The drug was first authorized in the US in 2001[4].
