Erythrocyte based prime solution is a specialized medical fluid used to prime the extracorporeal circuit during Isolated Limb Perfusion (ILP). ILP is a surgical technique employed to treat locally advanced malignancies of the extremities, such as melanoma and soft tissue sarcoma, by delivering high-dose chemotherapy (typically melphalan) to an isolated limb. The erythrocyte-based solution contains packed red blood cells (PRBCs) to maintain the oxygen-carrying capacity and oncotic pressure within the isolated circuit. This ensures adequate tissue oxygenation and metabolic stability during the hyperthermic phase of the procedure. The Vastra Gotaland Region has conducted clinical studies (e.g., NCT01639521) to evaluate the metabolic and immunological impact of this erythrocyte-containing solution compared to crystalloid-based alternatives that lack red blood cells.
