Overview

ErythroMer is a first-in-class, dried, bio-inspired artificial red blood cell designed as a universal blood substitute for the treatment of life-threatening blood loss when stored red blood cells are unavailable, undesirable, or in short supply. Developed by KaloCyte, it consists of purified human hemoglobin encapsulated within a soft lipid nanoparticle shell that mimics native erythrocytes. The design incorporates proprietary lipids and 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG) to regulate hemoglobin’s oxygen affinity in response to pH changes—emulating natural oxygen capture and release mechanisms of real RBCs. ErythroMer can be freeze-dried for long-term storage at ambient temperature and reconstituted with saline for rapid use in emergency settings such as trauma care or battlefield medicine. It is intended to be universally compatible across all blood types due to the absence of surface antigens found on natural RBCs. Preclinical studies have demonstrated effective oxygen delivery and safety in animal models; human trials are planned but not yet initiated[1][2][4][5].
