Erythromycin is a macrolide antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, skin infections, diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), syphilis, pelvic inflammatory disease, and others[1][2][3][4][5]. It works primarily by binding to the 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, inhibiting protein synthesis by blocking aminoacyl translocation during translation[5]. This action is bacteriostatic but can be bactericidal at higher concentrations or against highly susceptible organisms. In addition to its antimicrobial effects, erythromycin acts as an agonist at motilin receptors in the gastrointestinal tract and can be used as a prokinetic agent to stimulate gastric emptying[5]. It was first discovered in 1952.
