Overview

Erythromycin + latamoxef is a combination of two antibiotics used in the initial treatment of severe infections such as diffuse peritonitis with visceral failure. Erythromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, thereby blocking translocation. Latamoxef (also known as moxalactam) is an oxacephem antibiotic structurally related to cephalosporins; it acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through binding to penicillin-binding proteins. This combination has been studied for use in critically ill patients with acute peritonitis, where both drugs are administered intravenously for broad-spectrum coverage against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria[2][5]. Latamoxef is no longer available in the United States due to safety concerns including coagulopathy[5].
