Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Erythromycin ethylsuccinate is a macrolide antibiotic and a prodrug ester of erythromycin. It exerts its antibacterial effect by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria, specifically targeting the 23S ribosomal RNA, which inhibits RNA-dependent protein synthesis and prevents bacterial growth. It is indicated for a variety of infections, including respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and sexually transmitted diseases caused by organisms such as *Streptococcus pyogenes*, *Streptococcus pneumoniae*, *Mycoplasma pneumoniae*, and *Chlamydia trachomatis*. It is frequently utilized as an alternative treatment for patients with penicillin hypersensitivity. The ethylsuccinate ester is formulated to improve oral absorption and reduce the bitter taste associated with erythromycin base.
