Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Erythromycin thiocyanate is a macrolide antibiotic and the thiocyanate salt of erythromycin, a natural product produced by the fermentation of the actinomycete *Saccharopolyspora erythraea*. It functions as a potent inhibitor of bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, specifically targeting the 23S rRNA molecule. This binding blocks the transpeptidation and translocation steps of protein synthesis, leading to bacteriostatic or bactericidal effects depending on the concentration and the organism. Erythromycin thiocyanate is primarily active against Gram-positive bacteria, including *Staphylococcus* and *Streptococcus* species, as well as certain Gram-negative bacteria and *Mycoplasma*. In the pharmaceutical industry, it is a critical active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) and serves as a key intermediate for the semi-synthesis of other macrolide antibiotics such as azithromycin and clarithromycin. It is widely utilized in both human medicine and veterinary applications, particularly for treating respiratory and gastrointestinal infections in poultry and livestock. Duowei Pharmaceutical Group is a major developer and manufacturer of this API.
