Erythropoietin + iron is a combination therapy used primarily to treat anemia, especially in patients with chronic kidney disease, chemotherapy-induced anemia, or those undergoing surgery. Erythropoietin (EPO) is a glycoprotein hormone that stimulates the production of red blood cells by promoting the division and differentiation of erythroid progenitor cells in the bone marrow. Iron supplementation (administered orally or intravenously) provides the necessary substrate for hemoglobin synthesis and effective erythropoiesis. The combination enhances hematologic response compared to either agent alone, particularly in settings where iron deficiency limits the effectiveness of erythropoietin therapy. This regimen reduces transfusion requirements and increases hemoglobin concentrations preoperatively or during chronic disease management[4][5][6][8].
