Overview

Erythropoietin chitosan gel is an investigational topical biologic formulation developed by researchers at Ain Shams University. It consists of erythropoietin (EPO) incorporated into a thermosensitive hydrogel scaffold composed of 5% chitosan and 20% β-glycerophosphate disodium salt. The formulation is designed for topical application in periodontal surgery, specifically as an adjunct to split-thickness apically positioned flap procedures. Erythropoietin acts as a cytoprotective and pro-angiogenic agent that promotes tissue repair, stimulates cell proliferation, and exerts anti-inflammatory effects, thereby enhancing wound healing and increasing the width of attached gingiva in patients with gingival recession.
