Overview

Erythropoietin-Fc fusion protein (rhEPO-Fc) is a long-acting recombinant fusion protein consisting of human erythropoietin (EPO) linked to the Fc portion of human IgG. It is designed to stimulate erythropoiesis by binding to and activating the erythropoietin receptor (EPOR) on erythroid progenitor cells in the bone marrow. The addition of the Fc region extends the circulating half-life of the protein through neonatal Fc receptor (FcRn)-mediated recycling, allowing for less frequent dosing (e.g., once every two to four weeks) compared to conventional recombinant human EPO or darbepoetin alfa. This platform has been pursued by several developers, most notably Genexine (whose version is known as efepoetin alfa or GX-E2) and Shanghai Meiye Biotechnology, primarily for the treatment of anemia associated with chronic renal failure.
