Overview

Erythroxylum catuaba bark is the dried bark of a Brazilian rainforest tree from the Erythroxylum genus. Traditionally used in Brazil as an herbal remedy and tonic, it is most commonly marketed for its purported aphrodisiac and stimulant effects. The primary uses include enhancing sexual arousal and performance in men and addressing conditions such as agitation, fatigue (including neurasthenia), poor memory or forgetfulness, nervousness, sleeplessness related to high blood pressure, and as a general tonic[1][2][3]. Some sources also suggest potential anti-inflammatory, antidepressant, neuroprotective and antioxidant properties[4]. The mechanism of action is not well established but may involve compounds with antibacterial or antiviral activity[1][2]. There is insufficient scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness for any indication. It is primarily available as a dietary supplement in various forms including powders and tinctures.
