ES16001 is an oral investigational drug consisting of a 50% ethanol extract from the plant Elaeocarpus sylvestris var. ellipticus. It is being developed as a novel inhibitor of varicella zoster virus (VZV) reactivation, with the primary aim to prevent herpes zoster (shingles). The mechanism of action involves inhibition of VZV reactivation, though the precise molecular target has not been fully elucidated. Clinical studies have demonstrated good safety and tolerability in healthy adults, with only mild adverse reactions observed and no serious adverse events reported.
