Overview

Esatenolol is the (S)-enantiomer of atenolol, a well-known cardioselective beta-1 adrenergic antagonist. As a beta-blocker, its mechanism of action involves selectively binding to and blocking beta-1 adrenergic receptors, primarily located in the heart. This blockade inhibits the effects of endogenous catecholamines like isoproterenol, norepinephrine, and epinephrine, leading to a reduction in heart rate, blood pressure, and myocardial contractility. Esatenolol is a small molecule drug that has reached a maximum clinical trial phase of II for at least one investigational indication.
