ESB Thoracic refers to a regional anesthesia procedure, specifically an erector spinae plane (ESP) block, being evaluated for the management of postsurgical pain in patients undergoing thoracic surgery. In clinical trials conducted at George Washington University, this procedure involves the administration of bupivacaine hydrochloride (often using the brand Marcaine) as a bolus infusion into the fascial plane deep to the erector spinae muscle. Bupivacaine is a long-acting local anesthetic of the amide type that works by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels in nerve fibers, thereby preventing the generation and conduction of pain impulses. The primary goal of this intervention is to provide effective regional analgesia, reduce postoperative opioid consumption, and improve recovery outcomes for patients undergoing procedures such as pulmonary resection, pleurodesis, or decortication.
