EscharEx is a topical biological drug candidate designed for the enzymatic debridement of chronic and hard-to-heal wounds, such as venous leg ulcers (VLU) and diabetic foot ulcers (DFU). Developed by MediWound, it consists of a concentrate of proteolytic enzymes enriched in bromelain, extracted from the stem of the pineapple plant (*Ananas comosus*). The drug's mechanism of action involves the selective digestion of necrotic tissue (eschar) while sparing surrounding healthy, viable tissue. Unlike surgical debridement, which can be painful and non-selective, EscharEx offers a non-invasive alternative that can be applied in outpatient settings. It is currently being evaluated in late-stage clinical trials to improve wound bed preparation and accelerate the healing process by removing the necrotic barrier that inhibits tissue regeneration.
