Overview

Escherichia coli bacteriophage cocktail is a biologic therapy consisting of a mixture of several bacteriophages (viruses that infect and kill bacteria) that specifically target *Escherichia coli*. It is being developed by PHAXIAM Therapeutics (formerly Pherecydes Pharma) as a precision phage therapy to treat infections caused by antibiotic-resistant *E. coli*. [4, 8] The mechanism of action involves the lytic cycle of the phages, where they infect bacterial cells, replicate, and then burst (lyse) the cell, releasing new phages to infect surrounding bacteria. A specific cocktail, PP0121, was evaluated in the Phase I/II PHAGOBURN clinical trial for the topical treatment of wound infections in burn patients. [1, 2] The company is also exploring its use for other indications like bacteremia and prosthetic joint infections. [11, 14]
