Overview

Escherichia coli strain 83972 is a non-pathogenic, probiotic strain of *E. coli* being investigated as a live biotherapeutic product for the prevention of recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs). [2, 5] Originally isolated from a girl with long-term asymptomatic bacteriuria, this strain is well-adapted to colonize the human bladder without causing symptoms. [2, 10] The therapeutic approach, known as bacterial interference, involves intentionally colonizing the patient's bladder with this harmless bacterial strain via intravesical instillation. [1, 2, 24] This induced state of asymptomatic bacteriuria is intended to prevent the colonization and growth of pathogenic bacteria by outcompeting them for nutrients and attachment sites, thereby reducing the frequency of symptomatic UTIs. [1, 2] Clinical studies have demonstrated its safety and suggested efficacy in patients prone to recurrent infections, including those with neurogenic bladders and incomplete bladder emptying. [3, 9, 18]
