Overview

**Escherichia coli Symbio DSM 17252** is a nonpathogenic probiotic *Escherichia coli* preparation used as the active bacterial component of the oral medicinal product **Symbioflor 2**. The product contains a bacterial concentrate with viable *E. coli* and autolysed bacterial material and is marketed by SymbioPharm for treatment of irritable bowel syndrome in adults. Its intended activity is microbiome- and gut immune-system modulation rather than binding to a defined molecular drug target. European regulators concluded that Symbioflor 2 could remain authorised for irritable bowel syndrome but not for the broader indication of functional gastrointestinal disorders.
