Drug intelligence / Profile preview
NTNC80A (Escherichia phage NTNC80A) is a lytic bacteriophage belonging to the class Caudoviricetes (specifically the species *Rodentiumvirus NTNC80A*) that targets multidrug-resistant (MDR) uropathogenic *Escherichia coli* (UPEC). Developed by the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh, India, NTNC80A is being investigated for the treatment of refractory urinary tract infections (UTIs). Preclinical studies demonstrate a strong phage-antibiotic synergy (PAS) when NTNC80A is administered simultaneously with sub-inhibitory doses of ciprofloxacin. This synergy is driven by ciprofloxacin-induced bacterial cell filamentation, which disrupts the peptidoglycan layer and enhances bacterial susceptibility to phage-mediated lysis, leading to accelerated bacterial clearance and reduced emergence of resistance.
