Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This is a combination therapy consisting of escitalopram, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant, and Lactobacillus plantarum 299v, a probiotic bacterial strain. Escitalopram increases synaptic serotonin levels by inhibiting its reuptake in the central nervous system, thereby exerting antidepressant and anxiolytic effects. Lactobacillus plantarum 299v is a live biotherapeutic product that modulates gut microbiota composition and function; it has been shown to improve gastrointestinal health and may influence neuropsychiatric outcomes via the gut-brain axis. Clinical studies have investigated this combination as an augmentation strategy for major depressive disorder (MDD), with evidence suggesting improved cognitive performance and metabolic changes associated with mitochondrial function, inflammation reduction, oxidative stress modulation, and restoration of biochemical balance in patients receiving both agents[5][9][10]. The probiotic component may decrease kynurenine concentrations—a metabolite linked to depression—and enhance cognitive functions when used alongside SSRIs[5][10].
