Overview

Escitalopram + tramadol is a combination of two pharmaceutical drugs: escitalopram, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) primarily used to treat major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder, and tramadol, a centrally acting synthetic opioid analgesic with additional serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibition properties used for moderate to severe pain. Both drugs increase synaptic serotonin levels via different mechanisms—escitalopram by blocking the reuptake of serotonin into presynaptic neurons, and tramadol by inhibiting both serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake in addition to its μ-opioid receptor agonism. The combination can lead to an excessive buildup of serotonin in the body, increasing the risk for potentially life-threatening serotonin syndrome[2][1]. This interaction is considered highly clinically significant and generally should be avoided unless under special circumstances.
