Escitalopram oxalate + transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation is a combination therapy being investigated for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) and comorbid rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Escitalopram oxalate is an FDA-approved small molecule antidepressant that acts as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) by binding to the serotonin transporter (SERT), thereby increasing the availability of serotonin in the synaptic cleft. The transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) component is a non-invasive neuromodulation device that delivers electrical pulses to the auricular branch of the vagus nerve. This combination aims to leverage the antidepressant effects of escitalopram alongside the potential anti-inflammatory and autonomic-modulating effects of vagus nerve stimulation to treat both the psychiatric and physical symptoms of the dual diagnosis. The treatment protocol is currently being studied in clinical trials led by Xijing Hospital.
