Overview

Esgliteo is a fixed-dose combination (FDC) therapy containing the sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitor empagliflozin and the dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor linagliptin. Developed through a partnership between Boehringer Ingelheim and Eli Lilly, it is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Empagliflozin reduces blood glucose by inhibiting renal reabsorption of glucose in the proximal tubule, leading to its excretion in the urine. Linagliptin works by inhibiting the enzyme DPP-4, which slows the degradation of incretin hormones such as GLP-1 and GIP, thereby increasing insulin secretion and decreasing glucagon levels in a glucose-dependent manner. Esgliteo is the brand name specifically used in the South Korean market, while the same combination is marketed as Glyxambi in the United States and other international regions.
