Overview

Eslicarbazepine is an anticonvulsant medication primarily used to treat partial-onset (focal) seizures in adults and children aged 4 years and older. It is the active metabolite of the prodrug eslicarbazepine acetate. Eslicarbazepine works by stabilizing the inactivated state of voltage-gated sodium channels in neurons, thereby reducing abnormal electrical activity that can lead to seizures. This mechanism is similar to that of related drugs such as oxcarbazepine and carbamazepine.
