Overview

Eslicarbazepine acetate is an anticonvulsant medication used as monotherapy or adjunctive therapy for the treatment of partial-onset (focal) seizures in adults and children aged 4 years and older. It is a prodrug that is rapidly converted to its active metabolite, eslicarbazepine, after oral administration. Eslicarbazepine exerts its antiepileptic effects primarily by inhibiting voltage-gated sodium channels—especially in rapidly firing neurons—thereby stabilizing their inactive state and reducing neuronal excitability. It also enhances slow inactivation of these channels and may inhibit T-type calcium channels, contributing further to its anticonvulsant activity. Eslicarbazepine acetate belongs to the dibenzazepine carboxamide family and shares mechanistic similarities with oxcarbazepine and carbamazepine but has a distinct pharmacological profile[1][2][5][6].
