Overview

Esmolol is an ultra-short-acting, cardioselective beta-1 adrenergic receptor blocker primarily used for rapid control of heart rate and blood pressure in acute clinical settings. It acts by competitively antagonizing beta-1 adrenergic receptors in cardiac tissue, leading to decreased heart rate (negative chronotropy), reduced myocardial contractility (negative inotropy), and lower myocardial oxygen consumption. Esmolol has a rapid onset and short duration due to its quick metabolism by plasma esterases. It is indicated for the short-term management of supraventricular tachycardia (including atrial fibrillation or flutter with rapid ventricular response), perioperative or postoperative tachycardia and hypertension, as well as other situations requiring urgent control of heart rate or blood pressure[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. Its use is typically limited to intravenous administration in hospital settings.
