Overview
Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to reduce stomach acid production. It is indicated for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis, duodenal and gastric ulcers, prevention of NSAID-associated gastric ulcers, eradication of *Helicobacter pylori* infection (in combination with antibiotics), and conditions involving excessive gastric acid such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Esomeprazole works by specifically inhibiting the H+/K+-ATPase enzyme ("proton pump") in the gastric parietal cells, thereby blocking the final step in acid production. This inhibition is irreversible until new enzyme molecules are synthesized. The drug was developed by AstraZeneca.
