Overview
Esomeprazole + hydrotalcite is a combination therapy used primarily for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and related acid-related gastrointestinal disorders. Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that suppresses gastric acid secretion by irreversibly inhibiting the H+/K+-ATPase enzyme system in gastric parietal cells, thereby reducing both basal and stimulated gastric acid output. Hydrotalcite is an antacid with mucosal protective properties; it neutralizes stomach acid, adsorbs bile acids, and forms a protective layer over the gastric mucosa to aid healing and symptom relief. The combination targets GERD from two angles—reducing acid production and protecting/repairing the mucosa—resulting in improved symptom control, higher healing rates of esophageal/gastric mucosal injury, and lower recurrence compared to monotherapy[1][2][3][4][5]. This regimen is widely used in China for GERD, peptic ulcer disease, gastritis, and other conditions associated with excess stomach acidity.
