Overview
UI083 is an incrementally modified drug (IMD) being developed by Korea United Pharm for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It is a fixed-dose combination of esomeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), and sodium bicarbonate, an antacid. The formulation is designed to provide rapid acid suppression by using sodium bicarbonate to neutralize gastric acid, which protects the acid-labile esomeprazole from degradation and facilitates its absorption in the small intestine without the need for an enteric coating. This approach aims to achieve a faster onset of action compared to traditional delayed-release PPI formulations. UI083 is currently in Phase 1 clinical development to evaluate its pharmacokinetic profile and safety.
