Overview

Esomeprazole Mepha is a generic pharmaceutical product developed by Mepha Ltd., a Swiss subsidiary of Teva Pharmaceutical Industries. It contains esomeprazole, the S-enantiomer of omeprazole, which belongs to the class of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). The drug is primarily indicated for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), including the healing of erosive esophagitis and the long-term management of resolved esophagitis to prevent relapse. Mechanistically, esomeprazole is a prodrug that is activated in the acidic environment of the secretory canaliculi of the gastric parietal cell. Once activated, it forms a covalent bond with the H+/K+-ATPase enzyme (the proton pump), leading to the irreversible inhibition of gastric acid secretion. This reduction in acidity allows for the healing of acid-related esophageal and gastric lesions and provides relief from symptoms such as heartburn.
